Parent questions, an artist's perspective

Planning a Caricature Artist for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah

Could a caricature offend someone, create a queue or interrupt the party? Parent questions, edited answers from Muli Asido, sources and event photographs.

Could a caricature upset someone? How can you tell whether the style you liked will suit your family? What happens if everyone wants a drawing at once? These are reasonable questions to make room for before choosing an activity for a bar or bat mitzvah.

For Muli Asido, communicating with the family is part of the artist's work. The questions below explore concerns before booking and details worth agreeing beforehand. The answers adapt his supplied comments, written principles and answers published by Metsuyarim. That is his own publication, used alongside professional references about assessing a provider and preparing the space. 4

What should we discuss before deciding to book?

Muli: I would begin by getting to know the artist, or the person coordinating the booking at the company. A conversation helps establish what matters to you, the focus of the celebration and the experience you want to create. Preparation and agreed expectations make a real difference to the family's and artist's experience.

You can be straightforward: you want your child involved in choosing, you want adults to feel comfortable, or you prefer an activity people can approach throughout the evening. Understanding that intention gives the planning somewhere to begin.

A caricature is meant to be funny. How do we keep it comfortable for the person being drawn?

Muli: I adjust the exaggeration to the guest, their age and comfort. Some enjoy a playful extreme; others prefer a gentler drawing. Respect matters throughout the encounter. 4

Look at several works and discuss both style and manner with the artist. That helps establish what feels suitable to you. The International Society of Caricature Artists also includes respect for people and integrity in professional practice among its values. 1

Could the drawing station interrupt the dancing or programme?

Muli: I coordinate the station's position and drawing hours with the evening. Reception suits some events; after the main programme suits others. 4

Bring the schedule you already know and ask what the artist suggests. If there is a part the family particularly wants to share, mention it. You can then discuss where drawing fits and which details need coordinating with the venue too.

I am worried about a long queue. How should we plan for that?

Muli: Beforehand I check guest numbers, ages and available time. For a large event I arrange additional artists. I explain to parents what the chosen team can realistically complete. 4

The question is what suits your event. An invitation count alone cannot describe how the evening will unfold, who will want to sit or when. Discussing those details helps establish realistic expectations for guests.

Can we promise every guest a drawing?

Muli: One principle that guides me is: do not promise something you cannot actually provide. A promise needs to reflect the time, style and team agreed for the event. If particular people's drawings matter most to you, say so beforehand.

It is also worth clarifying what people receive: an individual portrait, a shared drawing, a particular material or another kind of keepsake. Leave the conversation knowing what is agreed and which details still need checking.

How can we check that the examples belong to the artist who will attend?

Muli: Getting to know the person coordinating the booking should help establish that too. Ask to see a range of the relevant artist's work and discuss what appealed to you. For me, professionalism includes both visual quality and pleasant human communication.

BBB's advice on choosing wedding vendors likewise recommends references, checking more than one information source and recording agreed details. It is a North American consumer source, used here as context for assessing a provider. 2

What should we bring to the planning conversation?

Muli: Bring your priorities and what you already know: who is celebrating, where the event will take place, who is expected and when you are considering drawing. You do not need to solve everything before getting in touch. The conversation helps us understand your focus and prepare together.

With the venue, clarify what the station includes, who supplies the table and chairs, and how guests can approach it. BBB's venue guide also recommends seeing the space and checking included equipment and services rather than deciding from photographs alone. 3

A short written summary can record who will draw, what is agreed, what matters to the family and what remains open. For choosing the artist, see the guide to choosing a caricature artist for your event.
